powerpoint 2010 slide transition issues

I am having issues with slide transitions. In particular the 'fade' doesn't seem to work properly. Fade Smooth seems to redisplay images already faded out before switching slides, and Fade Thru Black is very jumpy - looks like 4 frames instead of 40. Please advise if this is correctable?
